Additonal Notes
PowerPC Compatibility Note: Apple PowerPC systems
are only capable of booting from FireWire external hard drives. FireWire drives must be partitioned
using the Apple Partition Map (APM) partition type to allow the Mac OS X system to boot from the drive
properly. Apple PowerPC systems cannot boot from Global Unique Identifier (GUID) or Master Boot Record (MBR)
partition types. Furthermore, it has been tested and proven that Mac OS X cannot boot from an
external FireWire drive that is using the Prolific chipset. The Apple System Profiler can tell
you what chipset your FireWire drive is using.
Intel Compatibility Note: Apple Intel
systems are capable of booting from both FireWire and USB external hard drives. FireWire and USB
drives must be formatted using the Global Unique Identifier (GUID) partition type for Mac OS X on Intel
platforms to be able to boot from the drive. Apple Intel systems cannot boot from Apple Partition
Map (APM) or Master Boot Record (MBR) patition types. Unlike FireWire, Apple Intel systems with USB
external hard drives can boot from the Prolific chipset.
PowerPC vs. Intel Cloning: Because the
boot environment for PowerPC and Intel Mac systems are different, it is not possible to boot one type of
system from a clone made from the other type of system. While the data can be copied from one to the
other, Intel systems can't boot from a PowerPC clone, and vice versa.
