BRU Server for Linux/Unix/Solaris/IRIX System Requirements

Minimal Requirements

  • Linux x86 operating system (libc2.1 or libc2.3 based)
openSuSE 10.1, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and earlier (or any other Linux distobution that is running a 2.6.11 or prior kernel) is NOT SUPPORTED as the machine running the BRU Server Server software without an update of the kernel to either 2.4.24 or 2.6.12 or higher.
  • Server - 2.4.24+ or 2.6.12+ kernel
    • Client - Any kernel version with Networking support
  • Server - 1 GHz processor
    • Client - 500MHz PIII+
  • Server - 256 MB RAM
    • Client - Memory sufficient to run your system
Recommended Requirements (Server)

Disk Requirements

  • Server - 55 MB of disk for full install (server software, user interface console, agent)
    • 3 MB of disk per 100,000 files backed up
    • SCSI and Fibre-Channel connected tape drive or library (if using tape)
    • Disk Staging: disk requirements defined by Administrator
  • Client - 15 MB of disk on client systems
SPACER
Network Requirements
  • BRU Server requires firewall access through ports 14441 to 14450 for bi-direcional TCP traffic on both the server and client systems.
  • Red Hat's Enterprise Linux 4 release has device issues in the generic SCSI layer (which BRU Server uses), therefore RHEL4 is not supported as a server system. We do support RHEL4 as a client system. If you wish to stay with a Red Hat style system for your environment, we recommend the use of the Fedora Core 4 release with a 2.4.30+ or 2.6.12+ kernel installed as your BRU Server server system.
  • If you must use a 2.6 kernel, nothing prior to 2.6.11 is supported and we recommend that you either implement a Linux system that will allow you to run a 2.4.24+ series kernel or use the latest 2.6 kernel (currently 2.6.21).

Information on running multiple kernels on one system is available at The Tape Device Certification Site.

The latest Linux kernel information is always available from The Linux Kernel Archives site.
