INTEGRATED BRU AND SONY BACKUP SOLUTIONS DELIVER ULTRA-RELIABLE DATA PROTECTION SUPPORT TO SMB MARKET

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona - May 19, 2003 - The TOLIS Group, Inc., today announces that its BRU software has been certified with Sony Electronics' DDS drives and Advanced Intelligent Tape™ (AIT) drives and libraries. The resulting integrated solutions provide leadership data backup and recovery services for Small-to-Medium (SMB) businesses that deliver reliability, flexibility, performance, ease-of-use, and value new to the SMB market segment.

The solution configurations, that support Unix/Linux based system platforms, scale up to 40 GB DDS-based single system backup support to heterogeneous client/server network backup services (including Windows and Mac OS X clients) supported by 800 GB AIT-based libraries. Bell Microproducts distributes the BRU software together with the Sony DDS and AIT drives.

"Revenue and profit pressures felt by large backup software manufacturers in this prolonged soft IT market are driving them to focus on larger applications. The resulting effect on smaller businesses is backup solutions that no longer fit their computing requirements or budgets," says Bob Christ, executive vice president of TOLIS Group. "We've integrated and certified our proven BRU software with Sony's tape technologies and the resulting solutions provide rational, outstanding data protection choices in the SMB space."

"We were pleased to work with the TOLIS Group to certify the BRU software for use with Sony DDS and AIT drive technologies," said John Woelbern, director of OEM marketing and sales for Sony Electronics' Tape Storage Solutions division. "This combination provides cost-effective backup and archival software support for Unix and Linux systems in the small-to-medium-size business market."

The following two configurations highlight the integrated value pricing of the solutions @MSRP, available immediately through Bell Microproducts:

  • Single system environments - BRU Desktop and Sony DDS4, $1,199
  • Larger single systems or network environments - BRU-Pro and Sony AIT-2 Library, $7,549

Additional integrated solutions are also available, based on Sony's AIT-1 Library, ATAPI AIT-1, and SCSI AIT-1, AIT-2, and AIT-3 drives. TOLIS' BRU Workstation is a component of the solution mix as well and provides network system support when the power of BRU-Pro is not required.

TOLIS Group, Inc., the sponsor and administrator of the Linux Tape Device Certification Program (www.linuxtapecert.org), has certified the Sony tape devices for compatibility with Linux, and has additionally certified the devices for 100% interoperability with the BRU Desktop, Workstation, and BRU-Pro backup software solutions. To complement these integrated solutions, centralized technical support has been instituted that includes defined escalation mechanisms to assure expert technical support.

Operationally, the solutions provide leadership reliability. BRU accounts for each and every bit backed-up and recovered by using industry-unique logic to verify the accuracy of the backup - and assure successful data recovery. The combination of the reliability and unmatched price performance of Sony's DDS and AIT 1-3 tape families with the ease-of-use and data integrity of TOLIS' BRU software technology provide breakthrough data recoverability and price/performance characteristics to protect the increasing volumes of data on Linux/Unix based systems in use today.

Unix computing environments can be complex, and these products significantly ease the administrator's role to manage the backup operation. Operation can be done via intuitive graphical interfaces, or from the command line to customize operation. Regardless of the transport layer, whether it is Fibre-Channel, Gigabit Ethernet, or wireless LAN, the solutions simply plug-and-play. These solutions also provide investment protection through their flexibility to grow as the business grows.
